30 Second Guide - Scheduled Monuments
Scheduling is the selection of nationally important archaeological sites. Although archaeology is all around us, scheduled sites form a carefully chosen sample of them, which are closely managed.
‘The List’, originated in 1882, when the first powers of protection were established. These developed into what we know today as statutory ‘Listing’ just after the Second World War.
Our Scheduled Monument data uses the definitive map created by Historic England.
Our maps shows the locations of listed monuments, although they don’t show the full extent of the structures protected by each listing.
